Voice from the Fire
Let’s take the chill off. We can see each other’s breath. Let’s take away the darkness,
yet praise the quick shadows.
Our bodies shift with the wind. Let’s remove the guise of civilization. Let’s roast
whatever you caught today. The earth can speak for itself.
I am always ready for new hungers, new fear, old stories, quick hearts,
and the worship of any old mystery. Time is a pretense and light is a cage.
When you wake, I will give you my blanket. Made of ash, it says, “I am gone, yet I
am your passion, your past. I am your next love, your next of kin. I am a hollow in some
mountain. I am a mountain in some hollow. My body is yours, ascending.”
