A New Jacket

Yesterday four clowns were executed in the courtyard. A dove landed on the
windowsill while I watched. The papers were filled with it this morning, and by afternoon
the papers were shut down. Yet none of them had reported the rape of the young
rag-picker that followed, the soldiers too excited by what they had done, unable to
overlook her waiting to see if the bodies would be left wearing anything useful. She
whimpered loudly as they took turns, but held her arms out, away from the dirt, trying to
keep the white cuffs of the harlequin’s jacket clean.
